I am currently trying to get on social security disabiity but have heard they turn down 95% of applicants. Anybody on it or have tried and were turned down? Thanks
I had a friend that was turned down.  It's like with health insurance.  They don't expect people to appeal.

My friend had a heart condition, it was bad enough that 3 years later he received a heart transplant.  Still, he was turned down the first time, but was approved in the appeal.

They have a list of things that they approve immediately.  I think you can access that list online ... another friend of mine had terminal cancer and was approved within 30 days.
This link may provide you with some information.  Also, look in the "adult list" under #12:  Mental Disorders (yep, that's what it says).  Then look under "Organic mental disorders."  That should help you figure out if you'll be approved.

SOCIAL SECURITY "BLUE BOOK"
Thanks Debi,  I checked it out, guess it is a wait and see game. I  do take insult it is listed under Mental disorders though.
I found that a little surprising myself, but, it also falls under neurological disorders.  They will use both criteria.  I think it's just a matter of having all of your medical records available etc.
My husband is on disability due to the bleed he had from his brainstem angioma. It was approved the first time he applied.  We had to do some follow up paperwork this year.  I think the more detailed you are when you complete the forms, the better.  Good luck.
Because of all the legalese involved in filing, I'd encourage you to either contact http://www.allsup.com/ or a local attorney to help you with it. And yes, keep copies of medical records, etc. and your calendars of dr. appt. dates.
Filing for SSDI is usually a long, drawn out process, but hang in there with it!
Thanks everyone, I filled out the application and spoke with someone at Social Security who said I might hear back in 6 months.
